NBA regulation periods last twelve minutes and overtime periods last five minutes. A basketball selection still needs its own period and settlement conditions: a full-game result, a quarter and a numerical point line are different questions.
Start with the game's clock
NBA Rule 5 specifies twelve-minute regulation periods and five-minute overtime periods, with overtime played when the score is tied after the fourth period. Those are rules of the sport. Whether a particular selection includes overtime is a separate condition that must be checked.
Do not borrow a football normal-time convention and apply it to basketball. Read the product's actual period wording. A score shown at the end of regulation and a later final score can be different recorded observations.
Turn the label into a complete question

A spread exercise with invented teams
Imagine Harbour Hoops finishing on 108 points and Valley Five on 103. Harbour's winning margin is five points. In a hypothetical Harbour −4.5 condition, subtracting 4.5 from 108 leaves 103.5, above Valley's 103. In a −5.5 condition, it leaves 102.5, below 103.
These two numerical conditions therefore give different answers to the same invented score. A whole-number line introduces a possible equality case; the applicable rules determine how that case is treated.
Totals ask a different question
The invented 108–103 score produces a combined total of 211. That is above 210.5 and below 211.5. Neither calculation says which team was stronger before the game or whether a later fixture will produce the same total.
Always identify whether the total concerns the game, one team, a period or a player statistic. The number 211 means little until its measured quantity is defined.
Player information has its own conditions
A player statistic needs a named participant, an exact statistic and a period. Points, rebounds and assists are different measures. Read how non-participation and official statistical corrections are handled in the relevant terms.
Team line-ups and recent records provide context, but they do not settle a future condition. A statement that a player recently recorded a certain number should remain separate from a prediction that the number will be repeated.
Decimal prices remain price arithmetic
For an invented successful single selection, a nine-unit stake at decimal price 1.80 produces 16.20 units in total and 7.20 units of profit. The calculation assumes the selection succeeds and is fully settled under its stated rules.
